95% of all of bronchogenic carcinomas are directly related to cigarette smoking. If non-smokers develop lung cancer, it is more likely to be adenocarcinoma. Not that it is any less serious though, it is just a different cellular type.
If are a TV show "Survivor" fan, you might remember the winner of the 35th season. Adam took home a million US dollars pretax. His mom is a non-smoker that lived a healthy life but unfortunately passed away after Adam just got home from the show. It is always a sad story to think about. I watched the season after my mom was diagnosed while I was in the U.K. for an internship. It hit hard when Adam said in the show the reason that he joined the season was for his mom. I couldn't watch Adam talking about his mom while he was stranded on the island without crying. I love that HE was the one that won the million dollars.
