Incidence and Mortality of Stomach Cancer Gone Down

Incidence and mortality of stomach cancer in the U.S. have both gone done due to

  • Primary prevention

  • Primary prevention is to avoid risk factors and therefore decrease the number of new cases of the disease. This explains the reduction in incidence over time as seen in the graph. If the population size stays consistent, and the number of new cases is decreasing, there will also be a reduction in disease mortality as seen in the graph.

Early detection will not lower the incidence, only the mortality. However, I think implant general screening for early detection is just as important. My mom maintains a healthy diet and doesn't drink, yet she still got CRC at 47. There wasn't any primary prevention that she could have done because she was living as healthy as a person could be. Early detection would have caught it though. And I wish I had reminded her of that years ago.
